Eagles Regain Their Confidence, Set Sight on Trophy

WAFU CUP OF NATIONS

  • To play Benin Republic in one of Thursday’s s’finals

After defeating host country Ghana 2-0 to secure a place in tomorrow’s semi final of the ongoing WAFU Cup of Nations, home-based Super Eagles forward, Friday Ubong, has said that the Nigerian team has resolved to win the tournament in Ghana on Sunday.

Two second half goals by Tony Okpotu and Peter Eneji secured maximum three points for Nigeria after a stuttering start in the group games where they were held to goalless draws by Mali and Guinea.

“I wish to state here that we have not come to Ghana to just to take part in the championship, but to do our assignment properly and bring the trophy back to Nigeria, this has been our target since the start of the competition,” he told SCORENigeria tuesday.

The Akwa United star also revealed that the entire team was fired up to beat Ghana and reach the knockout stage of the tournament.

“It was not an easy task, but we (the players) were determined and that was why we won the match,” observed Ubong who saw 82 minutes of action against Ghana on Monday night at the Cape Coast Stadium.

“We played the game as if it were our last game in our entire career because we knew what was at stake.”

Nigeria will now battle the winners of Group B Benin Republic that defeated Niger Republic 2-1 yesterday for a place in Sunday’s final game.

Meanwhile, President of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) Ahmad will lead his executive committee to the final of this year’s WAFU Cup in Ghana on Sunday.

The WAFU Cup final will be staged on Sunday in Cape Coast, while the CAF executive committee will meet in Accra the previous day.

The WAFU Cup has enjoyed a revival with a new sponsorship from FoxSports Television. The overall winners of the sub-regional tournament will earn a prize money of $100,000.
