Delta Determined to Set up IPP in Oghara, Says Commissioner

By Omon-Julius Onabu in Asaba

The Delta State Commissioner for Finance, David Edevbie, has said that the state government is determined to ensure the realisation of the objective of setting up an independent power project in the state despite the huge challenges that have stalled the project since 2013.

Edevbie gave the assurance when he led a team of the committee, set up by the government on identifying the challenges confronting the project, on an inspection tour of the facility as well as the warehouse where various equipment meant for installation at the power generating plant are stored.

The warehoused equipment, including components of the turbines, crates containing heavy-duty generators from Rolls Royce in the United Kingdom and other materials, have been lying idle in Oghareki in Oghara, the administrative headquarters of Ethiope West Local Government Area of the state, where the project initiated by the Emmanuel Uduaghan administration is located.

The Oghara IPP plant was expected to, on completion, add 128 megawatts to the national grid, but the project has been abandoned after the importation of the aforementioned equipment and construction of associated infrastructure comprising the foundation for the power plant.

The team, which also included the project consultants, A & A Global, officials of Access Bank who are the financial advisers on the project, as well as a representative of the state Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, inspected the basic structures like buildings and transmitting towers and the large consignment of numerous component parts in the warehouse.
