SAN: Supreme Court Defers Conferment

The Supreme Court on Friday, announced the deferment of the prestigious rank of Senior Advocate of Nigeria SAN, on one of the successful applicants Oluwatoyin Ajoke Bashorun, pending the outcome of investigation of petition made against her. Bashorun was the only female among the 30 successful candidates recently announced by the Legal Practitioners’ Privileges Committee, for conferment of the title on Monday 18, 2017. However, a statement signed by the Chief Registrar of the Supreme Court / Secretary of the Legal Practitioners Privileges Committee, Hadizatu Mustapha yesterday said LPPC rising from its emergency meeting held on September 15th, 2017, took the decision pending further investigation against her by a special committee to be set up by the Chief Justice of Nigeria, justice Walter Onnoghen.

According to the secretary, paragraph 12(2) of the LPPC Committee Guidelines 2016 provides room for petition to be written and filed with the CJN /Chairman of the Legal Practitioners Privileges Committee within 18 days of the publication of the list of successful candidates to be awarded with the SAN title. “However after the announcement more facts have emerged touching on the eligibility of one of the otherwise successful applicants. Consequent upon that, the Legal Practitioners’ Privileges Committee in an emergency meeting held today, the 15th day of September, 2017, has decided to defer the conferment of the rank of Senior Advocate of Nigeria on Oluwatoyin Ajoke Bashorun Esq. pending further investigation by a special constituted committee set up by my Lord, the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Honuorable Justice Samuel Walter Nkanu Onnoghen GCON, Chairman of the Legal Practitioners’ Privileges Committee”, the statement read.
