Explosion Rocks Enugu Artisan Market as Police Begin Investigation

The Enugu State Police Command has said it has commenced full scale investigations into the explosion at the scrap site of the former New Artisan Market in Enugu .

Police confirmed the incident in a statement by its spokesman, Ebere Amaraizu.
It was gathered that an explosion had allegedly occurred at the scrap site of the former New Artisan Market Enugu at about 8p.m.
Though the cause of the explosion is yet to be ascertained and no life was lost, eyewitnesses who were around when the blast occurred said it was a bomb blast.

However, the incident is alleged to have caused minor destruction in a nearby food shop including two vehicles parked near the said shop.

THISDAY checks revealed that a generator battery, which could be the component of an improvised explosive device, was discovered at the scene of the explosion yesterday morning. Policemen eventually took away the material. Some of the traders said an explosion was heard in the market around 8p.m on Monday night. One of the traders, Musa Abubakar, said everybody around the market at the time ran away when the explosion occurred.

“The sound was so loud, it was like a bomb went off and everybody took to their heels. I was close to the site of the explosion, but I had to run away. It was so scary.
“It was just one explosion but it was very loud. “After about 30 minutes, we started coming back to the scene. We thank God no life was lost but some stalls, which were located at the site of the explosion, were destroyed.”

The state command has advised good people of the state particularly resident of the axis not to entertain fear or panic but to go about their normal lawful business as all hands are on deck by the command working in partnership with relevant sister security agencies and relevant stake holders for a safe and secured Enugu State and its environs.
