Firms Partner, Deliver Cheap Power to Businesses

Cummins Power Generation and Power Gas Nigeria plan to reduce the cost of operations for manufacturers in the area of power generation which seems to be a major challenge in the manufacturing sector.

The duo has inked a deal to replace diesel generators with gas generators for business operators and even domestic purposes which according to them, was a cheaper and environmentally friendly substitute for power generation in Nigeria.

According to Cummins Power, the latest development was part of its efforts to stir economic growth as the manufacturing unit is a crucial sector that hold the nation’s economic efficiency.

General Manager of Cummins Power noted that lack of adequate electricity needed to fuel the engine of the economy necessitated the need to devise alternative power source.

“Diesel generators could be expensive to manage because of the amount of fuel it consumes and the resultant cost effect is extremely high. Besides, it could be dangerous for the environment because of the pollution it generates.

By targeting to replace diesel and petrol backup generators, we aim to reduce air pollution by 25 per cent.

“The issue of environmental pollution in Nigeria is a time bomb waiting to explode as hundreds of people keep dying of air pollution either through petrol generator or car fumes. We need to know that particle matter and carbon monoxide are part of the most dangerous pollutants in the world and we are soothing through them in Nigeria.

“Adopting gas-based generators can also be economically rewarding. At current gas and diesel prices, a gas-based generator can provide electricity from N30 per unit (kWh) compared to N145 per litre for petrol and N175 per litre for a diesel generator set,” he said.

He added that the firm was working on multiple options to enable Nigerians accelerate gas generators’ adoption with a better operating cost when compared to a petrol or diesel set.

The gas industry in Nigeria is growing fast. There is a strong economic incentive for industries and power generation companies to switch to natural gas. Nigeria holds the world’s ninth largest proven natural gas reserves.
