ASUU, FG Reach Fresh Agreement

* Union may suspend strike

By Senator Iroegbu in Abuja

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) and the federal government ended their meeting in the early hours of Friday, reaching a fresh agreement that may lead to the suspension of ASUU’s industrial action.

The agreement is coming after about 14 hours of the marathon meeting between both parties at the Ministry of Labour and Employment, Abuja.

The accord reached between the two parties would result in the federal government beginning the payment of salary shortfalls as well as the quarterly revitalisation funds to the universities immediately.

To this end, the union has agreed to consider the federal government’s offer and suspend the strike.

However, the suspension would come after ASUU communicates the decisions to its National Executive Council (NEC) and reconvene a meeting with the government  within one week with a view to calling off the strike.
