WIMA Organises Road Walk to Mark Africa Day of Seas and Oceans

The Women in Maritime Africa (WIMA), Nigeria, has organised a road walk to create an awareness and enlightenment to sensitise the citizenry on the environment.

The road walk was part of the activities organised by the organisation to mark this year Africa Day of the Seas and Oceans.

The intercontinental body is a non-profit organization designed to answer the call of gender equality, women empowerment as well as to establish a cooperation entrepreneurship development of African women in the maritime industry.

A statement which issued in Lagos and signed by WIMA Nigeria President, Mrs. Jean Chiazor Anishere said the road show was organised to stir up awareness about the keen need for Nigeria to keep its oceans and seas safe and clean.

According to the statement, the road walk was also meant to ensure the development and continuity of Nigeria blue economy especially now that the country has suffered great financial loss from the flood incidents in virtually all states of the federation many parts.

Wearing branded polo shirts along Adetokunbo Ademola Street, Victoria- Island, Lagos, as they held their road walk which commenced from the Eko Hotels and Suites to Bar Beach, Victoria Island Lagos, the intercontinental body said the celebration of Africa’s day of the Seas and Oceans was in tandem with the African Union’s clarion call to all its member states to organize activities in their respective jurisdictions to commemorate the day.

It said the marking of the day was in line with this year’s theme: “Implementation of the African Charter on Maritime Security, Safety and Development in Africa: International Law and Policy Perspectives.”

As the WIMA Nigeria women raise awareness about the challenges facing African Seas and Oceans, it solicited help from the populace, to preserve our Oceans and Seas by doing the needful.

These include the following. “Do not throw refuse into our seas and oceans. Do not pour toxic waste into our seas and oceans. Make safe and sustainable Seafood choices. Make our seas and oceans safe and clean for safer Sea navigation. Support organizations working to protect our oceans. Educate yourself about oceans and marine life”.

The intercontinental body, the statement added, strives to provide strategic leadership and serve as a voice of gender empowerment in the maritime sector.

It added that it supports the advancement of women in the maritime sector in Africa and thereby strengthen the maritime capacity in the continent for the promotion of safe, secure and efficient shipping and cleaner oceans.
