Leader of the House of Representatives, Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila has advised students in secondary schools in the country to opt for any preferred subject between Christian Religious Studies (CRS) and Islamic Religious Studies(IRS)

Gbajabiamila who gave the advise while speaking with students, parents and principals of the 23 senior secondary schools in Surulere one federal constituency at the town hall meeting held recently, at the Teslim Balogun Stadium, Lagos, affirmed that parents will be held responsible for the misconduct of their children.

“On the issue of IRS and CRS, the House has resolved that they should not be made compulsory subjects and as such, students are at liberty to study any religion they desired to study. The constitution guarantees freedom of religion.

“The bill that is on the front burner now, the issue of school curriculum, whether students should take both CRS and IRS or make a choice of any one they like has generated some debates in the country.

“I want to know what your thoughts are, so that I can articulate your position in the House. But for now, the House has decided that the two should be separated. Whoever wants to study the Bible let him study it, whoever wants to study the Koran let him study it.
“The House of Representatives agreed on this, I do hope this will be the position of the other chamber, if it is not, we will find a way out of it by talking to the other people,” Gbajabiamila stressed.
