Deputy Senate President, Senator Ike Ekweremadu, yeaterday reaffirmed his determination to render selfless service to his people even as he vowed to improve the infrastructural deficit in his Enugu West senatorial district of Enugu State and beyond in order to improve the quality of life of the people.

Ekweremadu spoke as he inaugurated and handed over the rehabilitated St. Peters Catholic Church, Ituku and Community Secondary School, Obeagu in Awgu Local Government Area of Enugu.

He said government alone cannot sufficiently address the issue of provision of critical infrastructure especially in the face of dwindling economic fortunes and called on well meaning individuals and corporate bodies to help in addressing the challenge.

“During the war, most of the schools were destroyed; the walls were cracked by heavy shelling and the roofs were also destroyed. After the war in 1970 when some of us started attending school, these were the structures we met. We had to sit on the ground and bare floor to take lessons without doors and windows. 40-50 years later, we discovered that some of our children were still taking school lessons under the same type of environment we had after the war and we said that no more of that under our watch.

“We decided to intervene directly not by government effort or by attracting any projects but from our personal resources to ensure that our children will have a better environment for schooling. The task of providing critical infrastructure is so enormous and must not be left for the government alone. Well meaning individuals and corporate bodies must come in and fill the gaps to make life more meaningful for the people.

“We have intervened in Udi and Ezeagu; we have also intervened in Awgu town and in other places whenever we see those types of structures. We try as much as possible to rehabilitate them so that our children we have the advantage of modern day technology and good environment because we believe that environment itself is relevant to their health and studies.

“On account of this, when we were here some few months ago, this school was totally in a bad shape and so we deployed our resources and team of engineers to come and rehabilitate and make it what it is today and this can compare with any school block anywhere in the world.

“We would continue to intervene in the infrastructural development of all communities not only in Enugu West but beyond in our quest to uplift the quality of life of our constituents which is a just reward for their political investment in us as their elected representatives,” he said.
