Police Prevent Protest against Rampant Rape Cases in Kano

A combined team of security operatives on Tuesday prevented group of women who had gathered to embarked on a peaceful protest against incessant cases of rape in Kano.

The women who gathered at the Lugard Avenue Kano with aims of marching through the streets of Kano to protests the rampant cases of rape but were prevented by the policemen deployed at their meeting point.

Mrs. Hauwa Elyakub who is the leader of the protesting women group, accused the police of violating their constitutional right to protest.
“We had gathered as early as 7a.m, at the Meena Event Centre where we planned to walk to Government House and Emir’s palace to lodge our displeasure over the rampant rape cases in Kano despite the wet weather because it was actually raining. But to our surprised, we met the police barricaded the entrance of the place.”

She said cases of rape, particularly against minor is fast reaching alarming narrative in the state and regretted what she called negligence of government and security operatives to nip the menace in the bud.

Hauwa also regretted that the security could prevent fight against rape after duly notified.
According to her, “Rape cases in Kano is now on a daily basis and those are the once reported because Kano is a conservative society. Many don’t report their cases due to fear of stigma. Yet those victims reported have not gotten justice or compensation.
“If you check police records, we have hundreds of cases under investigation and government is doing nothing about it. We are tired of this situation and we want government to do some fast.”

The spokesman for the police in Kano, Magaji Musa Majia, debunked the allegation.
Majia insisted that the police have never stop lawful protest in Kano.
He also confirmed the approval of the protest by the police but the organisers were advised to discontinue with the plan due to security threat in the state.
