VOCAL INK STAGES POETRY AND JAZZ EVENT IN UYO

Poets and Jazz music lovers from all over Nigeria will get together at the Ultrafit Centre, Ewet Housing Estate Uyo, Akwa Ibom State on July 20 for a scintillating expression of spoken word, poetry and Jazz pieces in the maiden edition of ‘Poetry and Jazz’ put together by the pretty poet Desire Umoh of Vocal Ink Poetry Club, Uyo.

According to the organizers of the event, Poetry and Jazz is a creative project based on the history and the modernization of Jazz music with accompaniment of poetic pieces, positioned to gradually change the perception of word arts in south-south Nigeria. The event will be presented under the theme, ‘Fragmentation: Pieces of the Human Emotion’.

Renditions to be done in the poetry and spoken word category will come from a range of contemporary word artistes, including; Sixtus, Nsisong Effiong, Jackson Ogbonna, Anthony Sam, George Wonah, Console Melvin, Uyu Ita, Ann Akpan, Obiorah Momife, Osagi Alex, Anietie Etuk, Valentine Onyeka. Mr. Dehniece, Sunny Baseda, Essien Umoh, Gideon Bassey, Lawrence Mbebeng, Sammy Sax, Sam Trumpet and Samuel Udonquak will hold sway on the Jazz side of the divide. Jazz pieces to be played include; Frank Sinatra – Fly Me To The Moon, Nat King Cole – Route 66, George Benson – Breezin, Mahanthan – Lullaby of Birdland, Earl Klugh – Tropical Legs.

Renowned Academicians, Professor Kalu Uka, Professor of Drama and Theatre and semiotics and Dr. Grace Ekong, Head of Music Department, both of the University of Uyo, will present papers in the event titled, The History of Poetry and The History of Jazz respectively, to underscore the advent and beauty of these creative arts. The producer and host of the event, Desire Umoh, says “Poetry and Jazz will certainly be a testament to the power of the imagination to heal, console, elegize and cry out against the terrible demands of life and destiny”.
