Laolu Gbenjo: My Style of Music Stands Me Out

Laolu Gbenjo, a contemporary African Highlife gospel act with a mission to win a Grammy, broke into the industry about a decade ago and has grown to be a name to reckon with. In this interview with Tosin Clegg, he talks about his music, projects and career

How long have you been in this business?

It’s been 10 years since I started my career and it’s been interesting but also challenging. I give thanks to God. When I first started, finance and platforms were the major issue but, for now, things have been good.

Tell us about your career so far?

Right now, I have about three albums. First was in 2008, titled Next Level. Second was in 2014, titled Take Over and the recent album was in 2016 were Wole Oni did a great job. Also, I have had two concerts so far. First was in 2014 and second in 2016 with a great turnout, having acts like Akpororo, Tosin Bee, Shola Allyson, Efe Nathan, Onos, Beejay Sax, Acapella and lots more.

What makes you different from other acts?

I would say it’s my style of music. I do contemporary African Highlife gospel music and old CAC traditional music. So, I think that alone has given me a brand.

Any new project coming up soon?

I’m planning to do a song with Wole Oni. I just wrote the song titled, Jesus Did It and also plan on doing a worship song which people haven’t seen me do before. So, I’m trying to do something people haven’t known me for.
