Senate Tasks INEC on Transparency, Fairness in Osun Senatorial Rerun

Ahead of the rerun elections for the Osun  West senatorial seat, the Senate has urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to ensure transparency, equity and level playing field for all candidates.

It also urged the electoral body, security agencies and paramilitary organisations to allow unhindered and unrestricted participation in the election of all duly accredited voters.

Osun West senatorial seat became vacant following the sudden death of Senator Isiaka Adeleke on April 23, 2017.

Adopting the prayers of a motion sponsored yesterday by Senator Duro Faseyi (Ekiti North), the Senate expressed concern at the verbal attacks on each other by the leading candidates in the polls.

The front runners in the elections are Mr. Ademola Adeleke, brother to the late senator and candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Mr. Mudashir Husain of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Faseyi said the verbal attacks by the candidates is capable of heating up the polity in a community that has tethered on the edge of violence and breakdown of law and order.

“Call on all relevant security agencies in the electoral process to ensure that any persons suspected of electoral offences in the course of this election are apprehended and prosecuted to the full extent of the provisions of not only the Electoral Act but all other relevant laws,” he added.
