The Head of National Office (HNO), West Africa Examinations Council (WAEC), Mr. Olu Isaac Adenipekun, has expressed the council’s readiness to expose its staff to Information Communication Technology(ICT) training to enable them perform optimally in discharging their duties.
Adenipekun who made this known, recently, during a luncheon, organised in honour of the executives and members of the Education Writers’ Association of Nigeria (EWAN), in Lagos, said already the council has started the process, and expressed its determination to be a change agent in the sector.
According to him, “ we are bringing on board ICT in teaching, learning and research. The council has decided that it will be stepping out to take the lead in knowledge as far as ICT is concerned.â€
For the country to move forward, he said education must be given its pride of place, adding that with ICT, it cannot be relegated to the background.
The HNO said as a body that is concerned with assessment that is based on curriculum, it may not be able to assess candidates without taking into consideration how they were taught, noting that it is the reason why the council has decided that sharing knowledge with teachers in the classroom and other stakeholders as well as drawing the attention of everybody concerned to the place of ICT in the deliverables of education.
“We are going to start this programme with ourselves. All staff of council no matter their work schedule and position, will be made to go through ICT trainings that are relevant in the deliverables in the education sector. And once we able to take the lead with ourselves, we will be equipped and be sure to show the way to others.
He appealed to all stakeholders to partner with the council saying as a body concerned with assessment based on curriculum, the council has decided that sharing knowledge with teachers in the classroom and drawing their attention to ICT is the only way to progress as a nation.
The Chairman of the association, Mr. Tubosun Ogundare appealed to the council to organise training workshops for its members, noting that the move will go a long way in adding value to their reportage.
