Olx Secures Environment with ‘Used Goods ‘Dealings

In addition to its benefit of saving cost for Nigerians who shop for quality, yet affordable products, Olx business model of facilitating ‘used goods’ trading has contributed to the investment of protecting the Nigerian environment, said its Marketing Manager, Fifemayo Aiyesimoju.

She disclosed this on the occasion of the 2017 World Environment Day, WED, which the company celebrated together with Climate Stewards to make, the day a memorable one.

Explaining the modus operandi of Olx dealings to this year’s WED theme: Connecting People to Nature, Aiyesimoju stated that the company had always identified with nature in its engagement.

“At OLX we believe that sustainable consumption – selling and buying of used goods instead of purchasing new ones is a great way to create a healthy and clean and environment for us all.

“In a recent research conducted by us and Climate Stewards, the outcome showed that transactions held on our platform last year  helped to avert the emission of 1.3 million tonnes of CO2 which is equivalent to you flying around the world 160,000 times. To further put things into perspective  it’s also equivalent to 17, 000 tankers worth of petrol.

“Carbon footprint is the amount of carbon dioxide released into the atmosphere due to the activities of a particular individual, organisation, or community. Every time one sells a product on OLX, the life of the product gets extended. Every time one buys a used product, one less item gets produced, lowering CO2 emissions.

“To calculate carbon emission, all stages in the life-cycle of a product, from raw material procurement till it reaches a user, were taken into account for eight product categories on OLX. The categories covered include cars, mobile phones,  televisions, laptops, sofas, tablets, cameras, and books. Other categories such as fashion and beauty, hobbies, arts and sports, real estate and jobs were not included,” she said.

In realising this, Aiyesimoju  urged Nigerians to contribute their quota to environment preservation  by patronising used goods which was also economical.

“With thousands of quality used goods listings on the platform, you can  start doing your part in helping out the environment and fight against climate change. Start your journey towards a cleaner, and greener planet”,She enlightened. Wit
