Rain Destroys 150 Houses in Kano

Not less than 150 houses and farmlands were destroyed following a heavy downpour in Gwarzo Local Government of Kano State in the wee hours of Tuesday.

An eyewitness, Malam Ibrahim Garba Shuaibu, disclosed that the fence of Gwarzo Local Government Secretariat also collapsed while many vehicles were submerged as a result of the flood generated by the heavy downpour.

Shuaibu said the worst affected areas included Sabuwar Unguwa, Abuja quarters and some parts of Katambawa area in Gwarzo town, adding that a number of public buildings including primary schools were also affected by the flood.

Confirming the incident on Wednesday, the Executive Secretary of the State Emergency Relief and Rehabilitation Agency (SERERA), Mr. Aliyu Bashir, said the agency was yet to ascertain the exact number of the houses destroyed.

Bashir said a combined team of SERERA and National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) officials had been despatched to the area with a view to assessing the extent of damage caused by the flood.
