TUC Faults Buhari’s Proposed Mortgage Policy

The Ekiti State chapter of the Trade Union Congress (TUC) has said the paltry minimum wage offered Nigerian workers will impede the housing for all being planned for workers by President Muhammadu Buhari.

The Chairman of the Congress in Ekiti, Mr. Odunayo Adesoye, who spoke in Ado Ekiti on Friday on the proposal, said the policy
could only be realised if workers’ salaries are increased, adding that the federal government should give loans to workers directly to build their own houses.

Acting President Yemi Osinbajo had revealed in his presidential address on
Democracy Day, May 29, that President Buhari’s administration was committed to ensuring housing for all workers before the expiration of his tenure.

Adesoye said the policy has been in the pipeline for years without seeing the light of the day, adding that poor mortgage system occasioned by poor salary scale and corruption have always been the impediments.

The TUC boss said most of the housing units built by the Federal Mortgage
Bank in some state capitals were allocated to businessmen who were not
civil servants owing to their strong financial bases.
