The Leprosy Mission of Nigeria (TLMN) Wednesday said at least 160 new cases of leprosy were recorded in Sokoto State in the last one year.

The Operations Manager of TLMN, Mr. Pius Ogbu Sunday, made the disclosure at an advocacy seminar held at Sokoto, adding that the new cases were mostly recorded in Kebbe, Gudu and Rabah Local Government Areas of the state.

Sunday stated that the persons affected by the disease were currently receiving treatment at the Amanawa Leprosy Hospital, Sokoto.

“They are currently being treated free at the Amanawa Leprosy Hospital using the multi-drug therapy which lasts between six and 12 months depending on the degree of infection,” he said, maintaining that leprosy was curable and the disease could be curbed by early detection and treatment.

He described leprosy as a disease of the poor that damages the nerves leading to disability, adding that those affected by leprosy were victims of poor diet to the extent that the immune system was not able to fight the bacteria.
