Nwabueze: Self-detemination should Begin with Regional Autonomy

By Christopher Isiguzo in Enugu

Constitutional lawyer and leader of the Igbo Leaders of Thought, Prof Ben Nwabueze, on Tuesday in Enugu told pro-Biafra agitators that their desire for self-determination should be “a graduated process” beginning with regional autonomy.

He spoke when the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, led members of the Eastern Consultative Assembly (ECA) on a courtesy visit to him.

Nwabueze, who described Kanu as a great Igbo man and expressed delight at his doggedness in fighting for Ndigbo, added that the country should be restructured into six self-governing zones or regions, with the powers of the central government drastically reduced, so as to minimise the fierce contest for its control.

Nwabueze declared that: “I must say, today is one of the greatest days in my life — meeting you. Whatever anybody may say, you are a great Igbo man. How many of us are prepared to fight for Ndigbo?

Also on the visit were the Deputy Leader of the ECA, Mrs. Maria Okwor, and the Publicity Secretary, Rev. Fr. John Odey, among others.
