The Sokoto State-owned Orthopaedic Hospital in Wamakko Local Government area of the state has conducted surgeries on 1,548 patients in the state in the past two years.

The state Commissioner for Health, Dr. Balarabe Kakale, who made the disclosure to journalists during a visit to the hospital in Sokoto at the weekend, added that the hospital recorded 15,360 out patients and 1920 in-patients within the same period.

He disclosed that the hospital had also conducted the first super specialty total knee replacement surgeries in three patients in the state.

“The three patients would have spent millions of naira on each knee replacement surgery in India, Germany or other parts of the world but it was done at a very low cost here. Patients would no longer need to travel abroad for such operations and this would drastically reduce medical tourism,” he said.

The commissioner disclosed that plans were underway to conduct hip and shoulder replacement surgeries in the hospital.
