IOCs Relocation to Niger Delta

Members of the Bayelsa State House of Assembly  yesterday took turns to berate the House of Assembly and oil multinationals operating in the Niger Delta for working against the directive to relocate the oil companies’ head offices to the region.  They variously faulted  the reluctance of the companies to comply with the order , declaring that it was a clear disregard for the people’s agitation against the issues of environmental degradation and “economic servitude”.  Many of the state lawmakers also criticised the federal house of representatives  for rejecting the motion intended to affirm the directive given by the federal government.  Following  a motion moved by the Bayelsa State House Leader,  Peter Akpe,  the lawmakers agreed that there was the need for the IOCs to comply with the directive and immediately move their offices to the state.  Akpe, who represents Sagbama constituency 1, lamented that in spite of the fact that oil was discovered in commercial quantities at Oloibiri in Bayelsa State, the state and the Niger Delta region at large were still wallowing in “abject poverty, environmental and socio-economic deprivation.”
