Following the uneventful withdrawal of the United States government from the Paris Agreement, the federal government on Friday said Nigeria will not pull out of the agreement aimed at tackling the issue of climate change head on.

The Minister of State for Environment, Ibrahim Jibrin, gave the hint in Abuja ‎while addressing a press conference commemorating the 2017 World Environment Day taking place on 5th June.

He said the theme of this year’s event‎: ‘Connecting People to Nature’, would not have come at a better time considering the exigencies of the moment, especially the myriad of social, economic and environmental challenges confronting the country.

‎Baring his mind on the implications of US pulling out of the Paris Agreement which was signed by more than 190 countries after painful deliberations that took years before it was signed in November 2015‎, ‎Jibril said the US cannot cow the entire world.

According to him, “There is no doubt that the US decision to unilaterally pull out from the agreement will cause some little setback, but if you are following the trend of event since yesterday when this declaration ‎was made, almost all the major players from the big economy from the EU like Germany, France, Italy made a joint statement condemning the act and promising to fill the gap that may probably be left.”
