Herdsmen Attack: House Urges IG, NEMA to Restore Peace, Distribute Relief Materials to Delta Community

The House of Representatives on Tuesday passed a resolution calling on the Inspector General of Police (IG), Mr.  Ibrahim Idris, to intensify efforts aimed at returning peace to Ossissa community of Delta State following a recent attack by herdsmen.

In a motion by Hon. Ossai Nicholas Ossai (PDP, Delta),  the lawmakers further the police to immediately dislodge herdsmen of fire arms which they purportedly carrying about.

The House also called on National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to provide relief materials to members of the deceased families as a way of assuaging their trauma.

Ossai said a similar incident had occurred in November last year, in which scores of inhabitants of the community lost their lives.

He regretted that in spite of public condemnation and outcry over issues that triggered the violence, the matter had been ignored and allowed to degenerate further.

He said government has the responsibility to protect lives and property, assuring that the legislature on its part was obligated to seeing that the government lived up to its constitutional responsibilities.

Herdsmen were reported to have masterminded the various attacks on the people,  the latest being the May 11 incident  where the community was invaded while a commercial motorcycle rider was beheaded alongside six others killed on the fateful day.
