The federal government at the weekend began the payment of compensation to communities displaced as a result of the construction of Zungeru dam in Niger State.
The phased payment of compensation involves the release of over N1 billion. Not less than 98 communities are to be displaced as a result of the construction of the Zungeru dam which would bring the number of such projects in Niger State to four.
The Chairman of the Compensation and Relocation Committee, who is also the Niger State Commissioner for Works and Transport, Alhaji Abdulmalik Usman Cheche, while addressing some of the affected communities at the HYPPADEC Secretariat in Minna, said compensation would be paid first to those very close to the construction site where work had commenced.
Chechen said the federal government had been making efforts to fulfill its obligation by paying compensation to those communities affected in order to fast-track the construction of the new hydro electric dam project.
