Don't Spare Corrupt Officials, NUJ tells Niger Governor

By Laleye Dipo in Minna
The Nigeria Union of Journalists NUJ Niger State chapter on Thursday asked the All Progressives Congress government in the state not to spare any corrupt civil servant or politician saying corrupt practices had retarded the socio -economic growth of the state since its creation in 1976.
The Union said in a communique issued at the end of its general Congress held at the IBB pen house on Thursday that those found to have been involved in corrupt practices should not only be  made public  but should be made to face the full weight of the law.
Similarly the Union asked the government to block areas of leakages and put the necessary machinery in motion for the immediate identification of corrupt government officials and political office holders.
The stand of the union may not be unconnected with the discovery of multi-million naira fraud in the state pension board for which 30 government officials were indicted and moves allegedly being made to pardon the principal figures in the crime.
The communique jointly signed by Alhaji Mohammed Mohammed and Abu Nmadu chairman and secretary respectively also denounced the plan by the state government to amend the free education policy it inherited from the last administration especially the aspect affecting the payment of NECO and WAEC fees for students in public schools.
The union said the free education policy was a social security policy that should be retained without discriminating against anyone on any guise.
The congress however commended the government for its ongoing schools renovation programme and advised that everything should be done to give all the schools in the state the necessary facelift.
The meeting decried the deplorable conditions of all federal roads in the state and urged the federal government to intervene by rehabilitating these roads.
The Union pledged to  continue to give the state adequate publicity but said the administration should be ready to always render its stewardship to the people.
