Don Canvases Improved Attention for Literary Works of Northern Women

Prof. Asabe Kabir of the Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto, yesterday said the literary works of women from northern Nigeria deserves improved attention. Kabir, who is a Professor of Oral and African Literature, made the remark in Sokoto at the 18th Inaugural Lecture of the Institution held at the weekend. The lecture had as its theme:” Breaking the Silence: Northern Nigerian Women’s Self Expression Through Oral Literature and Literary Writings.”

‘She emphasised that the creative arts of women from northern Nigeria deserve attention and their various works ought to have greater critical attention. ”This is because of their distinctive viewpoints as they attempt to give expression to voices that have not always been heard as loudly and clearly as they should have been,” she said.

In a remark, the Vice Chancellor of the University, Prof. Abdullahi Zuru, who was represented by the Deputy Vice Chancellor Academics, Prof. Atiku Yahayya, said the inaugural lectures series in the institution would enhance effective teaching and learning. According to him, it would also boost socialization between the members of the University community. Zuru pledged to continue to adequately fund the lecture series, as well as all endeavors targeted at proffering plausible solutions to societal problems.
