FRSC Begins Enforcement of Speed Limiter

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has started implementing of the enforcement of Speed Limiters for commercial vehicles nationwide. It would be recalled that the Corps had embarked on advisory enforcement last year without apprehending motorists.

According to the Unit Commander, Lekki Unit Command, Assistant Corps Commander Azubike Onyemeh, “the Federal Road Safety Corps in the last couple of months has been on a Subtle Enforcement of the Speed Limiter on Commercial Fleet. This is sequel to previous stakeholders consultation and public sensitization on the imperative for having speed limiting devices fitted on commercial vehicles.

The Corps is poised to commence full enforcement of the speed limiter on all commercial fleet with effect from 1st February, 2017. The enforcement of the speed limiter is provided for in the National Road Traffic Regulations (NRTR) 2012, Section152 (4) which states that “A person shall not drive a vehicle on any public road which is not fitted with a speed limiter.”

According to Onyemeh, “the essence of enforcing this provision of the NRTR 2012 is to mitigate speed related Road Traffic Crashes. Consequent on the foregoing, the unit hereby places on notice the general public and commercial fleet operators in Lekki-Ajah axis in particular that the Command shall begin full enforcement of the speed limiting device on Wednesday, 1st February, 2017 as directed. The understanding and cooperation of the general public is highly solicited”.

It would be recalled that the FRSC had met with relevant stakeholders before the enforcement of the Speed Limiter. According to the Corps Marshal, Dr. Boboye Oyeyemi, “the Standard Organisation of Nigeria has approved the standard of the device which is to help cut down the speed limit. No matter how you accelerate, you cannot exceed that speed limit of a 100.”

In a related development, the Managing Director of Total Unique Services Limited, one of the 36 accredited Speed Limiter vendors, who is also the Chairman of the association of accredited Speed Limiter vendors, Alhaji Ibrahim Askirama has advised motorists to patronise only accredited dealers as published in FRSC website.
