Former Special Assistant on Public Relations to President Goodluck Jonathan, Dr. Sanya Awosan, has collaborated with some other politicians to setup a new political movement in Nigeria.
Speaking yesterday during the media presentation of the movement, the National Action Group of Nigeria (NAGON), held at the International Press Centre (IPC), Ogba, Lagos, Awosan lamented that the current political structure in the country only serves the interest of political elites.
According to him, “Today, many existing political parties can best be described as vehicles for promotion of selfish economic and social interest of very few at the expense of the greater percentage of the people.”
Insisting that the present political party system is incapable of moderating good governance that could bring abundance to a majority of the people, the former aide said those behind the movement hope to collaborate with Nigerians to bring about true democracy.
“The promoters of NAGON, having been active participants in some of these political parties, have decided to come together to agitate and struggle for the enthronement of ethics, values and democratic principles in the Nigerian political system,” he said.
He added that the body would be conscientising Nigerians against enterprise political system, galvanising Nigerians to show more interest in local and national political affairs and encourage parties to subscribe to transparent conduct in governance
Awosan also expressed support for the ongoing anti-corruption, suggesting that recovered loot must be transparently re-invested as he lent his voice to the call for the restructuring of the country.
Other participants at the event were Lagos Labour Party (LP) Chairman, Pastor Abiodun Popoola; the convener, 150 Million Nigerian for Change, Mr. Daniel Akinlami; member of the Ekiti State House of Assembly, Hon. Olugboyega Aribisogan; Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chieftain in Ekiti State, Hon Sanya Adesua; Lagos PDP spokesperson, Mr. Ganiyu Taofeek; Apostle Jaiyeloa Joseph and others.
