Oni Lekki of Lekkiland, Oba Olumuyiwa Ogunbekun, has asked Lagos State Governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode and Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Ibrahim Idris, to save the residents of Lekki and its environs from the terror of land grabbers.
The monarch sought assistance from the governor and the inspector-general in a statement he issued at the weekend, lamenting the incessant invasion of Lekki and its environ by some suspected land grabbers from Ajah.
As contained in the statement, Ogunbekun explained that the last two years had witnessed incessant invasion of Lekki town and Ebute Lekki by land grabbers, whom he said, were backed by military and police officers.
He said a staff member of Eti-Osa East Local Council Development Area was one of the suspected land grabbers, who claimed his father was a land owner in Lekki and Ebute Lekki.
He said suspect was going about different survey plans to defraud innocent people.
He explained how the suspected land grabber invaded the town with retired military officers, policemen and hoodlums, claiming that he had approval from the Lagos State Police Command to carry out the operation.
The monarch said his subjects had no other choice than to seek protection in his palace, noting that the suspect invaded a primary school in the town leading to its closure and pupils and teachers had to flee for their lives.
He lamented that police officers from the Akojo Police Division and MOPOL 49 “were invited, though were helpless. The land grabbers bulldozed buildings on the land and destroyed the fence of Anglican Church in Oshoriko and Igbekodo.
“This untoward act constitutes threat to the security of life and property. This should not be allowed to continue. We, thus, appeal to the Lagos State Government and the Nigeria Police to our aid and stop this dangerous trend.”
The monarch added that the residents of Lekki and Ebute Lekki among others “are living in fear because the use of bulldozers, caterpillars and other heavy-duty equipment is unprecedented,” thereby calling on the authorities to come to their aid.
