Golf: Birdies Inspire Bello to CBN Governor’s Cup Victory

Oludare Bello drilled four birdies to ease his path to victory as the overall winner of the 10thCBN Governor’s Cup Golf Tournament in Abuja.
Bello, the former Captain of IBB International Golf and Country Club, shot 70 nett to emerge the overall winner of the tournament played on Saturday.
The 8- handicapper, known to friends as ‘Big B’ birdied holes 1, 8, 14 and 18 on IBB golf course to stay in the hunt for the title that featured a field of 220 golfers.
Segun Adebayo beat Ado Samba on count-back after both players tied on 73 nett to win the Men Division 1 title.
Paul Erokoro finished a stroke off the pace for the second runner nett position.
Okey Igweh carded 79 to surge past E.R Chioba to annex the men gross, while Mohammed Suleiman came in with a score of 81 to place third.
Adekumbi Usman clinched the ladies division one prize by beating Anne Abimiku by five shots. Usman posted 93, while Mirabel Edozie trailed for third on 101.
The CBN Governor Godwin Emefiele was represented at the tournament by Yunusa Mohammed Sanusi.
Sanusi, who plays off handicap 20, said the tournament featured in addition to other guests, CBN pensioners Lagos, Kano and Jos, adding that CBN has faith in Nigeria and IBB International Golf Club by organising the tournament.
The bank’s Acting Director Corporate Communications, Isaac Okoronkwo, said the level of competition was improved by the opening up of the participation to over 220 players.
“It is a special edition because it is the 10th anniversary of the tournament. It not easy to sustain the sponsorship of any event for 10 years and it is in the spirit of CBN-to enable Nigerians excise their body and engage in competition,’’ Okoroafor said.
Top lawyer, Dr Alex Izinyon SAN, similarly lauded CBN for demonstrating faith in golf through the consistent sponsorship of the tournament of the years.
