FRSC Begins Enforcement of Speed Limiters, Appoints Zaki Zonal Commanding Officer

The Federal Road Safety Commission will begin the enforcement of  mandatory installation of speed-limiting device in commercial vehicles today.

Also, the commission has appointed Assistant Corps Marshal Shehu A Zaki as the Zonal Commanding Officer for Zone RS2 of the Federal Road Safety Corps, comprising Lagos and Ogun Sate Command has been appointed.

Zaki took over from his predecessor ACM Nseobong Charles Akpabio, who is now on a course at the Nigeria Defence Academy, Abuja, according to a statement by the Corps.

The FRSC on September 1, 2015 unveiled the Speed Limiting Devices which is to be installed in vehicles plying Nigerian roads to regulate the maximum speed a vehicle can attain, in a bid to ensure safety of lives and properties.

A speed limiting device sometimes referred to as governor’ is used for controlling the speed of a vehicle or a device used to measure or regulate the speed of a vehicle.

This device does not allow the driver to accelerate beyond the stipulated speed limit by law as has been programmed in the vehicle. So no matter how the driver tends to accelerate, the pre-set speed limit will not be exceeded.

There are two (2) major types of speed limiting devices; Mechanical speed limiting device; and the Electrical/Electronic speed limiting device.

On the speed limiter enforcement, starting today, October 1, 2016, the new Zonal Commander, ACM Zaki appealed to the public to comply.

Zaki said the last quarter of the year was usually the pinnacle of operations in the Corps and charged staff to put in more effort in ensuring a successful ‘Ember Month Operation’.

ACM Shehu A Zaki has served in various capacities of the Corps among which are Commanding Officer in over 10 Commands, Corps Provost Officer, Corps Intelligence Officer, Head Monitoring and Evaluation National Headquarter Officer, among others.

Zaki, in his maiden address to staff on resumption in Lagos Monday September 26, 2016, said he believes in leaving legacies behind wherever he worked and therefore would welcome innovations and creativity to move the Zone forward.

The Zonal Commanding Officer charged every staff to be diligent in their duties, come up with new initiatives to achieve different and better results.
