Nigeria Cup 2016 Tees off Today 

The annual Nigeria Golf Cup will kick off today at the golf section of Ikoyi Club 1938 with the juniors ‘competition, themed ‘Catch Them Young’ and will feature children from the ages two to 17.

At a media briefing to herald the completion, the chairman, Nigeria Cup Organising Committee, Bayo Alli, noted that the Nigeria Cup was used to celebrate Nigeria’s Independence, just as he noted that in spite of challenges facing the nation, there was so much to celebrate. According to him, “the fact that we remain as one united Nigeria is one good reason for this celebration”.

Alli, who also doubles as the golf section vice president said a number of players had emerged through the juniors’ competition to making waves in the game within Nigeria and abroad. He particularly named Tokunbo Pedro, Anita Uwadia and United Kingdom based-George Oboh.

Other categories of the competition to be played include the Caddies Competition slated for September 26, Ladies Competition, September 27, the Nigeria Cup Kitty is billed for September 28, and the Professional/Amateur, which is a mix of professional golfers and amateurs of handicap 0-12, making up of about 180 players, is slated for September 29.

On September 30, it would be the turn of guests and veterans to take to the course. These categories include players from sponsors and senior golfers of ages 60 and above.

The grand finale is billed for October 1. “It is the day the boys are separated from the men. It is the day the champion will emerge from about 160 golfers,” Alli said.

The event will be rounded up with gala night and awards to various winners and crowning of the Nigeria Cup 2016 winner.

According to him, the Nigeria Cup is a property of Ikoyi Golf Community Nigeria Association, and members are active amateur golfers who enjoy playing golf. They are an assemblage of successful men and women who are captains of various industries that believe through recreation they could promote the rich tradition and heritage of Nigeria with the game.
