The death of the late banker and socialite, Mustapha Olatunji Dokunmu, in July, 2015 had naturally thrown his family, friends and political associates into a prolonged mourning.
As proof that his thoughts still fill their hearts, they all converged on Victoria Garden Cemetery, Lekki-Epe Expressway, Lagos as well as his Victoria Island, Lagos residence recently to honour him and relive his life and times during a prayer session held to mark the first anniversary of his passing on.
It will be recalled that Dokunmu died after a protracted battle with stroke, barely one month after he buried his 83-year-old father, Chief Muraina Akanni Dokunmu (aka Madoks), the Balogun of Ake, Egbaland.
Dokunmu, who obtained a Master’s degree in Finance and Accounting from the University of Ibadan, belonged to the class of intellectually robust bankers who helped in shaping and defining what is today known as new generation banks.
After his exit from the banking sector, Dokunmu veered into politics and joined the Democratic Peoples’ Alliance (DPA). He later contested for a seat into the House of Representatives to represent the Abeokuta South Federal Constituency in 2007. Although he lost the bid for election into the House, Dokunmu earned the respect of many people for his style of politics.
Dokunmu, who was Social and General Secretary of the Island Club of Lagos, was known to be a charmer and made quite a strong impression on many society ladies.
