100 Players Gunning for Lagos Country Club Tennis Festival Honours

The inaugural edition of the Lagos Country Club Tennis Festival served off Tuesday with over 100 participants jostling for honours in what promises to be three weeks of tennis festivities.

According to Segun Aluko, Captain of the Tennis Section, eight categories will be competed for at the tournament which is sponsored by Etisalat. The categories are Men’s Singles (class A and B), Men’s Doubles, Veterans Doubles and Women’s Doubles. Others are 18 and Under, 12 and Under, 10 and Under and 8 and Under.

All the junior categories are for boys and girls while the Ball Boys are not also left out as they will compete at junior and senior levels.

“The Lagos Country Club is a family club and the objective is for bonding and that is why it is all encompassing going by the categories absorbed.

“Aside the interaction and networking, its also about fitness and health people needs to exercise and keep fit. Its also a way to identify, nurture and build talents as some of the junior players are playing international tennis for Nigeria,” he stated.

He pointed that the Lagos Country Club is reputed to have the best clay courts in the country and as such the long-term vision is to hold international event like ATP in the nearest future.
“This is the biggest event in the history of the tennis section and its in line with our plan to bring top-class international tennis to Nigeria as we are looking forward to take advantage of our courts which is the best clay court facilities in Nigeria.

“The size and scope of the tournament makes it unique and there is going to be lots of activities in between notable of which is mega parties planned between the three weekends in the duration of the tournament.”
The tournament will end on September 25.
