On the Recurring Blasphemy Killings

Prominent religious and traditional rulers in the country, especially in the North, have condemned the recent killing of eight persons at Abdu Gusau Polytechnic, Talata Mafara, in Zamfara State, for alleged blasphemy.

The Jama’atu Nasril Islam said in a statement, “Individual Muslims are not Jurists, but faithful in the practising of the religion. Therefore, they don’t have the right to pass judgement on emotions. The nasty behaviour of some miscreants should not be misconstrued as the Islamic teaching.”

President Muhammadu Buhari has also condemned the killings. What is now left is for the security agencies to take up the matter and ensure the culprits are made to face the full weight of the law. Acts like this cannot stop except those who perpetrate them are punished according to the laws of the country.
