Akwa Ibom Govt. Directs Councils to Build Camps for Anticipated Flood Victims

In line with the alarm raised by the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) of impending flooding in some states of the federation, the Akwa Ibom State Government has directed the chairmen of the identified local government areas in the state to build camps for rescued victims in the anticipated flood.

During the month, NiMet had warned of impending flooding this year in 11 states – Akwa Ibom, Bauchi, Benue, Borno, Cross River, Delta, Kaduna, Kwara, Nasarawa, Yobe and Zamfara

Following the caution by NiMet, the Akwa Ibom State Government had selected 15 coastal local government areas of the state for sensitization on risk-reduction measures during flooding.

The state government had categorised the 15 flood prone Local Government Areas (LGAs) into four groups for purpose of the sensitisation.

The Oron group comprises Oron, Udung Uko, Mbo, Urue Offong/Oruko and Okobo LGAs while Ibeno group or centre is make up of Eket, Esit Eket, Onna and Ibeno LGAs.

The LGAs in Ikot Abasi group or centre are Mkpat Enin, Eastern Obolo,Ikot Abasi while Itu centre comprises Uruan, Ibiono Ibom and Itu LGAs.

While visiting the Itu centre, the State Government directed the chairmen of the15 Local Government Areas prone to flooding to start building camps for rescue of victims in view of anticipated flood.
