Edo Council Workers Rejoice over Payment of 7 Months’ Salaries

Workers of Egor Local Government Council, Edo state on Monday were all in high spirits following the payment of seven months’ arrears of salaries, thanking members of the state House of Assembly for the approval and timely release of funds to pay them.

The state Chairman, Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees, Comrade Young Ilenikhena, expressed the workers’ appreciation and called on the state government to do more to clear the arrears.

Comrade Ilenikhena also confirmed that NULGE is working seriously with the state Internal Revenue board to release Egor, Oredo and Ikpoba-Okha local government percentage without further delay.

Also speaking, Speaker, Edo State House of Assembly, Justin Okonoboh, at the resumption of plenary, said that Egor local government council workers have been paid seven months’ salaries arrears.

According to him, “Parliament recently adopted a resolution which mandated the State Government to source the sum of N366,467,000.00 from the Central Bank of Nigeria to pay workers in Egor Local Government.

“With this gesture, the council workers have been paid seven months out of the seventeen months salary arrears owed workers by the Council.”

The Speaker who sued for affected workers’ patience, said all categories of workers being owed in the State will be paid, adding that they should go about their normal duties.

Meanwhile, the House has launched an investigation into the boundary crisis involving Idumeko, Ekpon and Ewohinmin in Igueben Local Government Area.

Also being investigated is the alleged indiscriminate collection of levies to the tune of N70,000 from members of Association of Table Water Producers of Nigeria, Edo State Chapter, by agents of Ministry of Energy and Water Resources.

The House Speaker, Hon. Justin Okonoboh, referred the petitions to the Committees on Lands, Surveys and Housing and that of Energy and Water Resources to present their report for further legislative action within two weeks.
