I Want Asa to Perform at My Party: Nathan McDonald Imakop: I Can’t Travel without My Bass Guitar

Growing up in Nigeria’s colonial capital of Calabar with a family of musicians exposed little Nathan to the nitty-gritty of music. The producer and bass guitarist shores with Adedayo Adejobi his 24 years in music

The story of Nat King began in the former capital territory of Nigeria, Calabar. He grew up as a child in a family of musicians. He whined on his limitation as a young music listener who couldn’t enjoy the fun of playing it. His involvement with music started as a five-year-old drummer. When he finally bought his bass guitar at seven, he joined the music team in his local church with the hope to broaden his horizon and hadn’t looked back ever since.

His involvement in music has spanned a period of 24 years but he’s been plying his trade professionally for the past nine years. The journey as he recalled had been an experience filled with puddles of different stories. They were times running away seemed his only option and other times music trailed him like his shadow. “Good times and bad times always come, as it tends to shake things up always, but that’s the virtue of life as a musician. Two sides, of a coin. “It’s just a balance’ he enthused.

His debut single, Azunga, was produced by one of Africa’s finest producers Masterkraft. That was his first professional experience as a recording artist. His enthusiasm to make music on a daily basis pushed him into the Producer lane, which has fetched him fruits in his new tracks. His choices of producers are directly proportional to the level of musicianship they exhibit. His exposure to different genres of music colours his work, which now rubs off in his musical projections.

As a result, his choice would be a producer that would be on the same page with his musical understanding. His exposure to Gospel music as a child plays a huge role in his life but he’s learning to infuse other genres which are evident in his latest single Ima Abasi featuring Frank Edwards. When asked of his biggest audience so far, he smiled and replied Rhythm Unplugged Concert held in Lagos.

His inspiration most times comes from his motivations, experiences, and projections. This forms a virtue that he ascribed to God. Going by his latest single, Ima Abasi. His reason for the feature goes beyond the fact that he’s a Platinum selling Nigerian Gospel Artiste. Frank Edwards’ ability to relate with the message of the song endeared him. NAT KING is a man big on second chance.

Below are the list of artist he’s played with: Lagbaja, Wizkid, Frank Edwards, Banky W, Tee Mac Iseli (MFR), Jesse Jagz, Masterkraft, etc, but also sharing the stage with some of planet earth’s greatest like; Angie Stone; Richard Bona; Beautiful Nubia; Jimmy Dludlu; Gerald Albright; Mike Stern Pure & Simple and many more.

Notable artists he will love to meet, even though some of them are late, include, Michael Jackson, Abraham Laboriel (Bassist), Snarky Puppy, Kirk Franklin amongst others. He can’t do without travelling with Bass guitar and Laptop. Amongst all of the world greats, Nat King would love Asa to perform at his party. Given the power to do and undo, he would love to put hatred to extinction. Asking this man about the future left him grinning from ear to ear. ‘More life changing music, blessed music career, and best fans worldwide’.
