The federal government and the Commonwealth of Learning (COL), an affiliate of the Commonwealth of Nations, on Monday expressed great concern over poor indexes relating to access to quality education in Nigeria.

Minister of State for Education, Prof. Anthony Anwukah, stated this in Abuja, adding that there was urgent need for government through the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) to scale up access to education.

He explained that Nigeria is determined to meet all its obligations to the Commonwealth of Learning (COL) as soon as the financial situation of the country improves.

Anwukah stated this at a parley with the President of the Commonwealth of Learning (COL), Prof. Asha Kanwar, in Abuja.

He stressed that government is actively promoting Open and Distance Learning through NOUN and the National Teachers Institute (NTI) as alternative ways of increasing access to higher education.
