Robbers Storm Warri Government House Annexe, Kills Driver

Unknown gunmen on Thursday stormed Government House, Warri Annexe, Delta state, killing a driver in an attempt to dispossess him of a huge amount of money withdrawn from a bank as logistics for government officials holding meeting in the complex.

The dare-devil armed robbers, THISDAY gathered, had laid ambush for the driver and two officials who had gone to a bank to withdraw the money meant for members of a special security outfit established by the Delta State Government.

It was gathered that the incident occurred at about noon in Warri .

An eye-witness account said the driver and some staff of Government House Annexe had gone to the bank to withdraw money for logistics needed for the Delta State Waterways Security meeting holding at the annex.

It was further gathered that the robbers lay in wait for the vehicle conveying the cash at the entrance of the premises of the Annex by Edjeba Expressway.

According to the account, the robbers blocked the vehicle as it was about to enter but the driver managed to brush aside the blockade and escaped.

He was however unlucky as the robbers shot at him fatally while trying to escape.

THISDAY learnt that the wounded driver was said to have driven the car with the money safely into Government House before he was rushed to the hospital.

But he died on the way while Mobile police men on guard at the Annex gave the robbers a hot chase but could not apprehend them.
