Assembly Approves Renaming of Sokoto State Polytechnic after Shinkafi

The Sokoto State House of Assembly has passed a bill for a law to amend the Sokoto State Polytechnic Law, 2014, and rename it Umaru Ali Shinkafi Polytechnic, Sokoto.

This followed a motion moved yesterday by the assembly’s leader, Alhaji Garba Bello (APC- Yabo), after scrutinising the bill at the committee of the whole house. “Umaru Shinkafi was a great leader that needs to always be remembered for his past records, both in the development of Sokoto and Nigeria at large.

“In fact, Shinkafi deserved more recognition not only in Sokoto, but across all sectors of the country for his dedication, engagement and courage for the growth and peace of the nation,” he added.
The Speaker, Alhaji Salihu Maidaji, said: “The House does approve to amend the Polytechnic of Sokoto State Law 2014, and rename the polytechnic Umaru Ali Shinkafi Polytechnic, Sokoto.”

In a related development, the assembly considered a bill for a law to provide for the establishment of Zakkat and Endowment Commission. The house also considered a bill to amend the Public Procurement and Price Law, 2013.
The two bills were referred to the House Committee on Finance and Religious Affairs, respectively. In another development, the assembly condoled with the victims of the fire incident at the Sokoto old market.

Maidaji said: “The Assembly sympathised with all the victims of the incident and will also ensure necessary support to ease the pains of the huge losses.” The speaker called on all relevant authorities and agencies to urgently come to the aid of the victims, to ease their suffering.
