‘Delta Poised to Stamp Out Illiteracy, Supports Adult Education’

Delta State Government has expressed its commitment to stamp out illiteracy in the state through programmes including adult education, saying illiteracy constitutes a major obstacle to social and economic development of any society.
The Delta State Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Mr Chiedu Ebie, who stated this in Asaba, described Adult Education as a vital platform to eradicate illiteracy among youths and adults in the country.
Ebie made the assertion at the presentation of learning materials to supervisors of adult learners at the conference hall of the Agency for Adult and Non-formal Education in the state capital.
He stressed that literacy equips citizens to contribute meaningfully to the development of themselves and the society, saying the learning materials would go a long way in addressing the challenges of illiteracy amongst youths and adults in the state who, for one reason or the other, could not attain formal education.
He emphasized that the Okowa led administration appreciates the importance of education in achieving its policy on ‘Prosperity for all Deltans’q and that the administration was poised to ensure that illiteracy among youths and adults was totally eradicated in the state through the Agency for Adult and Non-formal Education.
Ebie expressed appreciation over the provision of the learning materials to Adult Learners in Delta State at no cost by the Federal Ministry of Education through the National Commission for Mass Literacy, Adult and Non-Formal Education.
While commending the efforts of the state agency, the commissioner particularly charged the ‘Adult Supervisors’ at the local government areas to ensure that the learning materials get to the end users, the adult learners.
He however cautioned that on no account should the learning materials be diverted, sold or kept unused in houses or offices of the Adult Supervisors.
