After their exit from the 2016 Federation Cup, Sunshine Stars are now regrouping to put in a decent run in the business end of the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL).
The club captain, Sunday Abe and head coach, Solomon Ogbeide, spoke about their ambition of finishing very well in the top tier in Nigeria this term to make up for their Cup exit in the hands of holders, Akwa United, on Tuesday.
Abe said: “We thank the club management and also commend the efforts of my teammates for the journey so far. Our focus is now on the league since we are out of the Federation Cup through the lottery of penalties.”
Ogbeide is grateful to the club for showing “understanding” despite their failure to progress in the Cup competition.
He is hopeful of guiding the club to an impressive finish in the Nigeria top-flight.
“We are really grateful to the leadership of this club for the kind of love and understanding always shown at all times – the professional way of handling the affairs has seen us this far,” Ogbeide said.
However, the club president, Prince John Ola Mafo, wants the players and coaches to focus on the league which now remains their only competitive chance to win a silverware or reach one of the Caf club competitions next year.
According to Mafo, the team can excel with “more hard work, determination and commitment,” as they face Nasarawa United this weekend in a matchweek 27 league game.
