Cyber Crime Prevention: FG to Accede to Budapest Convention

The Minister of Communications, Mr. Adebayo Shittu, on Friday declared Nigeria’s readiness to accede to the Budapest Convention, whose goal is to establish a common criminal policy to combat computer-related crimes and internet fraud.
He disclosed this at a one-day stakeholders’ seminar on Cyber Crime Prevention and Mitigation in the Public Sector, in Abuja.
According to him, the treaty seeks to address internet and computer crime by harmonizing national laws, improving investigative techniques, and increasing cooperation among nations.

Shittu said he was prepared to fully cooperate with stakeholders to fight online menace. He noted the need for cyber security awareness among the populace, cooperation of the law enforcement and communication service provider and efficient prosecution of cases of cybercrime as necessary in winning the war.

In another development, the Director General for Cyber Protection and Development (Cyber Corps), a Non-Governmental Organization (NGO), established for the prevention of online crime and on the cyberspace, Alhaji Ibrahim Shehu, has inaugurated its six zonal coordinators.
