Lekki Gardens Empowers Survivors of Building Collapse

The management of Lekki Gardens has provided empowerment support for 11 survivors of the collapsed Lekki Gardens building.

The survivors, Tunde Busari, Wahab Olalude, Chukwudi James, Elechi Chika, Kayode Ezekiel, Waliu Rasak, Emeka Okorie, James Chikodi, Idowu Salawu, Hassan Isiaku and Tajudeen Ajani were given N50,000 and a brand new Tricycle each.

A building under construction by the company collapsed on March 3, leaving some dead and several injured.
Presenting the package to the survivors, the CEO of Lekki Gardens, Richard Nyong expressed regret about the incident saying it has been a difficult period for all involved.

He stated that the gesture was the first step taken by the company in a bid to relief the pains caused the victims. He noted that human life is invaluable, hence no amount is sufficient to repay their losses. According to him, the survivors must move on with their lives, which was why the company decided to assist them to get back to their feet.

In his words: “There is nothing we can do to replace lives but the journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step and for us this is the first step in trying to ameliorate the damage.
“On behalf of the board and management of Lekki Gardens, we are saying sorry to those who have lost so much. It’s our decision to help in whatever way we can to correct what has gone wrong.

“It’s a difficult situation for everyone involved, even as an observer. This occasion is about the people that were hurt but, we thank God that they are alive. No amount is sufficient but some amount is enough for someone that wants to make a difference.

“We wanted to take everything at once when the Lagos State Government finish the case they are handling, but my management team felt it is better we begin to fix everything the same time because the life of these survivors can’t wait. They need to start doing something, earning some money because some of them depend on their daily pay to eat. Their lives have to move on and that’s the important thing.

“So today we are giving out a sum of N50,000 and a Tricycle to each of them as a means of empowerment. We hope that from here they can start doing some businesses that can get some money into their pockets.

“I started like them when someone gave me N750,000 six years ago. So I believe that what we are giving you today can become your seed of greatness and we believe God will add increase to it.”
Nyong also stated that the company has “a major plan” for the families of those who died in the incident, which will be announced very soon.”
