Sokoto State Government on Thursday said it spends N850 million monthly on the payment of salaries of teachers in the state.

Speaking at the Annual General Meeting of the Sokoto Education Development Trust Fund, Tambuwal said huge amount of money had been spent in purchasing teaching and learning materials for the schools.

He maintained that this was borne out of his administration’s emphasis on the education sector and the desire to revamp it.

”This is the reason the state government declared a state of emergency on the sector, while we allocated the lion’s share of the 2016 budget to it,”Tambuwal said.

He promised to assist the Fund to undertake its lofty objectives of complementing government’s efforts in funding education.

The governor commended the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhamnad Sa’ad Abubakar III, for providing credible leadership to the state and the country.

In a remark, the Sultan commended the Fund for its relentless efforts to assist youths in the state to acquire all forms of education.

He noted that the Fund had recorded tremendous achievements in all its activities for the last 14 years.

Abubakar acknowledged the efforts of the state government in improving education and solicited the sustained support of the people of the state to the Fund, saying funding education should not be left to the government alone.

Also speaking, Second Republic President and Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Fund, Alhaji Shehu Shagari, restated its commitment to continue to initiate programmes aimed at enhancing education in the state.
