Sokoto State Government on Tuesday said it had concluded arrangements to relocate the Timber Kara market to Madurawa along Birnin Kebbi road to ease traffic congestion in the area.
The state Commissioner of Land and Housing, Alhaji Bello Guiwa, made the disclosure at a ministerial press briefing at the NUJ Press Centre, Sokoto.
He said the move became necessary following the incessant fire outbreaks that gutted many shops at the Kara market in recent years.
“As you are aware, the Sokoto Timber market has witnessed several fire incidents which led to loss of properties and goods worth several millions of naira.
“Thus, the present administration deemed it necessary to relocate the Kara market to a better area to reduce the incessant inferno being witnessed there and ease traffic congestion,”Guiwa said.
The Commissioner posited that the decision of the state government to relocate the market was borne out of the desire to provide a conducive atmosphere for traders to carry out their business activities.
He pointed out that even the traders at the market were really in support of the government’s decision in view of the huge losses they had recorded as a result of fire outbreaks in the last four years.
Guiwa said the government had released funds for the ongoing construction work at the 500 housing units at Gidan Manada estate inherited from the immediate past administration.
