Efforts to tackle the incessant destruction of critical national assets in the Niger Delta revved up on Friday with a former Flag Officer Commanding, Naval Training Command, Apapa, Lagos State, Rear Admiral Joseph Okojie, taking charge of security operations in the region.

Major General Alani Okunlola, who had hitherto headed the defunct Joint Task Force, which was renamed ‘Delta Safe’ by the federal government, has been moved to the Defence Headquarters, Abuja.

In a ceremony at the headquarters of Operation Delta Safe at Igbogene on the outskirts of Yenagoa, Okojie vowed to continue from where his predecessor stopped.

The new commander said his leadership would ensure seamless operations in the Niger Delta in collaboration with other security agencies.

He vowed that in line with the mandate of the Operation Delta Safe, he and his colleagues would rout criminalities in the region.

Rear Admiral Okojie, the first military officer from the Navy to assume the headship of the command since its inception, noted that he would immediately swing into action to ensure that peace returns to the oil-rich region.

In his remarks, Okunlola, the outgoing Commander said during his stint as the head of the outfit, he and his team recorded a number of achievements.

“We came, we saw, we conquered. Nigeria expects everybody to do their duties and I have done mine in the Niger Delta,” Okunlola stated.
