Ikpeazu Wants Kazaure to Source NYSC Kits in Aba

The Abia State Governor, Okezie Ikpeazu, wednesday said that there was no need for the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) to keep importing of uniforms and foot wears for corps members since such kits can be produced in Aba, the commercial city of Abia State.

He stated this when the Director General of NYSC, Brigadier-General Suleiman, paid him a courtesy visit at the government house, saying that the Aba artisans involved in finished garment and leather products were capable of producing not only NYSC kits but also military and para-military kits.

The Abia governor pointedly requested Kazaure that NYSC should patronise made in Aba products as the artisans can produce better uniforms and foot wears for corps members at faster rate and would meet orders on notice.
“Abia is ready to provide both cloths and shoes for both NYSC and other uniformed organisations in Nigeria,” Ikpeazu said, adding that it was high time Nigeria stopped spending scarce foreign exchange on items that can be produced locally.

Dr Ikpeazu commended the NYSC scheme for being a uniting factor and urged Nigerians to not only reflect on but also emphasise on the stated that Nigerians should reflect on the things that bind the country together.
He disclosed that youth corps members serving in Abia would benefit from the ongoing skills acquisition programme of government and would be trained in fabrics, electrical and modern building technology, among others, in order to be self-employed.

The Abia governor also noted that the NYSC was a veritable means to drive government policies and programmes, adding that the scheme could be depended on for successful implementation of the agriculture value chain.
Brig-Gen Kazaure had earlier in his remarks explained that he was in the state for a routine inspection of camp facilities for the batch A, stream 2, of the NYSC orientation programme in the state.

He said that the NYSC was still facing some problems in Abia that needed to be tackled and asked the governor to assist in erosion control in the camp, rehabilitation of the female hostel and provision of water.
Speaking with journalists later the NYSC DG has come to stay and those calling for it to be scrapped would not succeed because of its unifying role in the country. He explained that the reduction of the orientation period from three to two weeks was due to issue of logistics.
