It is exactly three months to new years’ day! Can I get an Amen from every fashion enthusiast? Oh well for us fashion lovers, September- “Fashion’s New Year”, is that time of the year when New York, being one of every fashion lover’s most cherished cities in the world, plays host to one week of lights, camera, fashion and everything in between. And that one week is called Fashion Week.
That revered time of the year when a league of fashion-savvy crowd, who regardless of their differences, gather under the same tent for the purpose of viewing fashion’s post-gospel carefully curated and interpreted by more than a handful of established and budding designers. This year’s fashion week kicks off from September 8 to 15 ,2016. The period when the glamorous comes out of hiding and instagram is being flooded with streetstyles like we have never seen before.
With celebrities all coming out to attend their favorite designer’s shows and carefully pick the looks they would be wearing during the awards season, which are usually a few months away. Fashionistas and fashion buyers are also in the forefront, as well, looking for the best buys to invest in. And the press, which includes bloggers and photographers, are looking set.
While I look forward to another brilliant season of New York Fashion Week, the platform that launched the careers of top and burgeoning models like Lineisy Montero, Nigeria’s Oluchi Onweagba, Tanzania’s Millen Magese, Africa’s Next Top Model cycle 1 winner, Aamito Lagum, Elite model like Nigerian winners, Mayowa Nicholas and Victor Ndigwe, I am anticipating this year’s NYFW and hoping that our favorite African designers will interpret Africa once again in the most fashionable way.
“I think it’s all about a lot of research and wanting to bring the African heritage into the United States and globally so that people actually realise that the African print goes a long way back and there is history,” says South African designer, David Tlalewho, who is known to have dressed everyone that is who in fashion and society from TV personality, Bonang Matheba, former victoria secret model, Oluchi Onweagba to Miss South Africa (2008) Tatum Keshwar. This year, my eyes are set on some of my favorites like David Tlale, Tsemaye Binitie, Lisa Folawiyo, Lanre DaSilva Ajayi, Korto Momolu, Maki Oh, Ozwald Boateng, Gavin Rajah, Tiffany Amber, Christie Brown, among others that storm the big apple every September for the rigours known as Fashion Week. And most refreshing are the African models that will debut and make a statement this year. Follow me on my journey as I recap on NYFW 2015 joyously anticipating 2016 edition.
